Students in Foods and Nutrition 2 Honors, Hospitality and Tourism Honors, Entrepreneurship Honors, and AP Biology traveled to Ayden and Kinston, NC for an Eastern NC Revitalization and Sustainable Agriculture field trip. First students visited Simply Natural Creamery in Ayden to learn where local dairy products come from. Next, students toured revitalized Downtown Kinston where they interviewed locals to learn how the area is becoming a “come-back destination” in Eastern NC. Students were then treated to lunch at Vivian Howard’s The Boiler Room to sample Eastern NC farm-to-table cuisine. To end their first evening, students attended a Down East Wood Ducks Baseball Game to explore how regional sports add to tourist economies.
On day two, they incorporated STEM into their Eastern NC Revitalization and Sustainable Farming tour by visiting Lenoir Community College to learn about horticulture and sustainable agriculture. They then traveled to Putnam Family Farms to pick seasonally fresh strawberries where they grow entirely without pesticides. Lastly, students experienced another Eastern NC culinary specialty by having lunch at the famous Skylight Inn. Eastern NC whole hog BBQ and smoked chicken at its best. What an amazing learning experience!
