Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies Foods 2 Honors and AP Biology and Earth and Environmental students, under the direction of teachers Evan Ferguson and Erin Del Monte, traveled to Raleigh and Durham for a STEM sustainable farming and life sciences field trip on May 11-12.
First, students visited the NC Farmers Market in Raleigh for lunch and exploring. There, students were tasked with identifying and sampling in-season NC produce and products. Next, students traveled to Maple View Farm in Hillsborough where they toured the 400 acre dairy farm and educational center to better understand sustainable and humane farming practices. Students discussed the importance of grass fed dairy cattle in the food industry and sampled ice cream prepared at the dairy.
The next morning, students traveled to the Life and Science Museum in Durham. Students checked out the 84 acre facility and interactive science park which includes a two-story science center, one of the largest butterfly conservatories on the East Coast, and beautifully landscaped outdoor exhibits which are safe havens for rescued black bears, lemurs, and endangered red wolves.
Foods 2 and Earth and Environmental students related their experience directly to class curriculum. Funding for this trip was generously provided by Dare Education Foundation and Hatteras Island Youth Education Fund.
